Evaluation of the theory

Contemporary personality theorists criticize Freud’s theory for its lack of scientific data or conclusive evidence, due to its focus on unobservable abstract concepts. It is also criticized for its determinism, as it proposes that personality is determined in adolescence itself. Freud’s sample was limited and consisted only of neurotic patients; therefore, it is criticized as not applicable to the general public. Freud is also condemned for seeing women as inferior to men. However, some of his concepts, such as the existence of the unconscious, have been supported by modern scientific data, and his legacy has been revamped by neo-freudians who emphasize the role of the ego.
